Mexico remains America’s most popular overseas destination, especially during the winter months.

But if you’re tired of the crowds on the beaches of Cancun, or the culture vultures that flock to Mexico City then why not try Tampico instead?

From March 6, 2025, American Airlines will be launching a brand-new direct flight to Tampico International Airport.

This new route will fly nonstop from Dallas Fort Worth International Airport.

With the addition of this new flight, American Airlines is the largest U.S. airline to operate in Mexico.

What makes this route so significant is that it will be the first nonstop route between the U.S. and Tampico, opening up the city to the American market.

Bookings opened on September 16 so I had a look at prices to see how much this new route would cost.

A basic economy round trip in the main cabin for one passenger will currently cost $620. This is based on flying out on March 24 and returning on March 30.

The outbound flight time for this route is 2 hours 7 minutes, while the inbound flight time is 2 hours 6 minutes.

This is an appealingly short flight time, making this a great choice for a short break or a long weekend.

It’s worth noting that a basic economy ticket with American Airlines does not include a choice of seat or a checked bag.

If you want any of these perks, your ticket price will be higher, or it may be worth upgrading to a main or main plus ticket class.

Why Visit Tampico

If you’ve never heard of Tampico, then you may be wondering what the city has to offer.

Tampico is a lush and tropical port city that offers both beautiful beaches and a bustling city vibe at the same time.

First things first, let’s talk about the beach!

You can’t really talk about Mexico without mentioning its beautiful sand beaches, and Tampico boasts one of the best in the business.

Miramar Beach is the most well-known tourist attraction in Tampico and it sits on the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico and boasts a great expanse of golden sand as well as a pretty jetty.
It’s a beautiful and charming place to relax and unwind.

If you’re looking for something a little more high-octane, Tampico is also a great place to enjoy watersports. Kayaking, stand-up paddleboards, and even jet skis can all be hired from spots along the waterfront.

If you’re more interested in eco-tourism, then the Laguna del Carpintero is just 15 minutes from the city center and is a popular spot for animal encounters, flora, and fauna.

This is the perfect place to be if you want to see turtles, iguanas, and even a crocodile.

The best way to explore Laguna del Carpintero is by boat tour. Fun fact: The International Powerboat Competition takes place on this lagoon every year.

Cultural Explorations In Tampico

Away from the beach, those with an interest in Mexico’s rich history should visit the Plaza de la Libertad.

This is a historic square that boasts large historic buildings and old homes that give an insight into a Tampico of past years.

Nearby is Tampico Cathedral, which has a traditional Italian design and is a relatively modern cathedral that wasn’t constructed until 1841.

It is an opulent cathedral with 3 naves and a marble altar that is well worth exploring. Entry to the cathedral is free and it free and it’s open every day from 07:30 am – 08:00 pm.

For history buffs a visit to the is a must. As well as being one of the most architecturally stunning buildings in the city, it also contains a small museum.

Here you can learn about the city, and about the fight for Mexican independence.

The experience features a fascinating movie about the role that soldiers from Tampico played in this battle.

Entry to this building is also free, although tips for your tour guides are welcomed.
